Aspect Ratio Explanation

Video Aspect Ratio & PiP for Ultra-Wide LED Screens

When planning an event, the shape of your video content must match your LED screen.

The wrong aspect ratio leads to black bars, stretched images, or cropped visuals.

For ultra-wide screens, Picture-in-Picture (PiP) offers a smart way to use the extra space.

Common Aspect Ratios

  • 16:9 – Standard for presentations, YouTube, conferences.

  • 21:9 – Cinematic ultra-wide, ideal for stage backdrops.

  • 4:3 – Legacy format, still used in some corporate settings.

  • 1:1 / 9:16 – Square or vertical, for social media displays.

The Ultra-Wide Challenge

LED walls can be built in custom shapes. If your screen is 21:9 or wider, standard 16:9 content will leave large black bars on the sides—or get stretched and distorted. The solution is either to produce content in the screen’s native ratio, or to use PiP to fill the space intelligently.

What Is PiP for Ultra-Wide Screens ?

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) means displaying multiple video sources on one screen at the same time. On an ultra-wide LED wall, you can divide the screen into zones:

  • A large main window (e.g., live speaker feed)

  • Smaller inset windows (e.g., presentation slides, close-ups, social media feed, sponsor logos)

A video processor or switcher composites these sources into a single output that fits the screen’s resolution. Each source keeps its own aspect ratio inside its assigned zone, so nothing gets distorted.

Why Use PiP on Ultra-Wide Screens ?

  • Maximize screen real estate – no wasted black bars.

  • Show multiple content types at once – speaker + slides + live tweets.

  • Create dynamic layouts – switch between full-screen and multi-zone views.

  • Enhance audience engagement – more information, better visual interest.

Practical Tips

  1. Plan zones in advance – decide how many windows and their sizes.

  2. Keep aspect ratios within zones – a 16:9 camera feed should stay 16:9 inside its PiP window.

  3. Use a capable video mixer – not all switchers support multi-zone PiP.

  4. Test before the event – rehearse the layout with actual content.

  5. Consider content production – if you want a seamless ultra-wide background, produce custom graphics in that ratio.
