Understanding LED Screen Pitch: A Guide for Event Organizers in Rwanda
When planning an event in Kigali—whether it’s an international conference, a product launch, or a live concert—the visual experience can make or break the audience’s engagement. One of the most important technical decisions you’ll face is choosing the right LED screen pitch.
But what exactly is pixel pitch, and why does it matter? In this guide, LED Concept Ltd, Rwanda’s specialist in LED wall rental and event production, explains everything you need to know to make the right choice.
What Is LED Screen Pitch ?
LED screen pitch (also called pixel pitch) is the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels on an LED display, measured in millimeters (mm).
-
Smaller pitch = pixels are closer together = higher resolution and sharper image.
-
Larger pitch = pixels are farther apart = lower resolution, but often brighter and more affordable for large-scale viewing.
For example, a P3.9mm screen has pixels 3.9mm apart, while a P10mm screen has pixels 10mm apart. The smaller the number, the more detailed the image—but also the higher the cost.
Why Pitch Matters for Your Event
The right pitch ensures your audience can see clear, vibrant content without distortion. The wrong pitch can lead to:
-
Pixelated or blurry images if the audience is too close to a large-pitch screen.
-
Wasted budget if you rent a high-resolution screen for an audience that’s sitting far away.
-
Poor visibility if the screen is too small or too dim for the venue.
The golden rule in the AV industry is: minimum viewing distance (in meters) = pixel pitch (in mm). So a P3.9mm screen is best viewed from at least 3.9 meters away. A P10mm screen should be viewed from 10 meters or more.
Choosing the Right Pitch for Your Event in Rwanda
Different events demand different pitches. Here’s a quick guide:
1. Conferences and Corporate Events
Recommended pitch: P1.9mm to P3.9mm
Conference audiences are often seated close to the stage, and they need to read text, see data, and watch presentations clearly. A fine-pitch screen (P1.9mm or P2.6mm) is ideal for boardrooms, hotel conference halls, and the Kigali Convention Centre. For larger conference halls where the front row is 5–10 meters away, P3.9mm works well.
2. Concerts and Live Performances
Recommended pitch: P4.8mm to P10mm
Concert audiences are usually far from the stage, and the focus is on dynamic visuals, live camera feeds, and atmospheric graphics. A larger pitch like P4.8mm or P6mm offers high brightness and is cost-effective for large stage backdrops. For outdoor festivals where the crowd is 20+ meters away, P10mm is often sufficient.
3. Exhibitions and Trade Shows
Recommended pitch: P2.6mm to P4.8mm
Exhibition booths need to attract passersby and display product videos or branding. Since visitors may stand just a few meters away, a finer pitch like P2.6mm or P3.9mm ensures a premium look. For large exhibition walls viewed from a distance, P4.8mm is a good balance.
4. Outdoor Advertising and Mega-Events
Recommended pitch: P6mm to P16mm
For stadiums, outdoor festivals, and large public screenings, brightness and durability matter more than fine detail. Larger pitches like P6mm, P8mm, or P10mm deliver bright, visible images from long distances and are more weather-resistant.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Choosing pitch based on price alone: A cheaper large-pitch screen may ruin the experience if the audience is close.
-
Ignoring venue size: Always measure the distance from the screen to the furthest and closest viewer.
-
Forgetting ambient light: Outdoor events in daylight need higher brightness (measured in nits), not just a smaller pitch.
-
Not consulting an expert: Every event is unique. A professional AV partner can recommend the optimal pitch for your budget and goals.
